Carol Ramachandran rushes through the restaurant door, sits down at the table and\u00a0apologises for being a few minutes late. She is the mother of four children, in full-time\u00a0employment, and also helps run the family’s new restaurant, Mulan.\u00a0She has\u00a0given up her lunch hour to chat about how, in amongst all her\u00a0other commitments, she\u00a0recently made the time to successfully complete her\u00a0Certificate in Bookkeeping<\/a>.\u00a0Under the\u00a0circumstances, there was really no need for her to say sorry!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
Carol and her husband James (Mulan’s head chef) emigrated from Penang, Malaysia in\u00a02001.\u00a0She was an extremely experienced and competent financial administrator, having\u00a0set up and\u00a0run systems for tax, payroll, reconciliation, stock flow, and profit and\u00a0loss. She had several\u00a0certificates in accounting and business studies, notably from the London Chamber of\u00a0Commerce & Industry (LCCI Malaysia) and the Association of Business Executives (ABE).<\/p>\n

In spite of all this, Carol felt she needed a local\u00a0qualification, one which potential\u00a0future employers would immediately recognise and value. Initially, she\u00a0signed up for a\u00a0degree in accounting at University. However, she quickly realised that, for her at\u00a0least, this was not a great option. The financial cost was high (approx. $700 per paper), it\u00a0was very time intensive and she says she felt as though she was studying merely to pass\u00a0exams rather than to put the knowledge into practical everyday usage. With her husband\u00a0working long and unpredictable hours, attending scheduled classes away from home was\u00a0just too hard. “I passed the Finance paper, but I honestly thought\u00a0I’d be lucky to finish the\u00a0whole course by the time I retired!” remarks Carol. “It just didn’t suit my\u00a0lifestyle.”<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Carol would like to become an Accounting Technician. She is therefore continuing her incredible juggling act, having just signed up for her\u00a0Accounting Pathway Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
